Non-Browser Based Design - Alberto Moro

Work title: Hello
School: Università IUAV di Venezia
Country: Italy

Description
Paper, leds, electronics, wire, internet connection

Communication objective
With every browser in the world, anyone who visits my website, can click on the "Say Hello" button. While it is pressed, a 3D "typographic" building that reads, "HELLO", lights up. The actual "HELLO" building is located in my design studio, so I'm able to see when someone is visiting my website and wants to say Hello.

Tools used
While designing and proto-typing the installation, we used Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. We also used Acrobat for the graphics of the final project presentations.

Description
Adobe Flash project

Communication objective
The idea of my project to tell the children in the form of a game on environmental issues. If children learn that there is a problem, find out where garbage is taken and what happens to it next, perhaps the world will be better. After all, children can tell their parents how to behave, how to help save our planet for ourselves and for future generations.

Tools used
Adobe Illustration was used, with the assembly done in Adobe Flash.
I also used a little Adobe Photoshop to create images.

Description
Generative Art Application: Image to sound translation

Communication objective
To answer the question, "What would the Mona Lisa sound like?" we created the application to attribute a unique note per every colored pixel. This is a blending of both the visual arts and music arts, allowing us to experience the sound of a painting or image, rather than only the visual.

Tools used
Nearly the entire application was developed by using Adobe Flash Professional CS4, and ActionScript 3. There was also a very limited amount of PHP that was used to patch up cross-domain security concerns. All XHTML, CSS, and Javascript and images were created in Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop.

Typography built out of tape deck tape, wrapped around pins on wall

Communication objective
Hip Hop Haven is a non-profit organization that works with inner-city youth to discourage drug usage and violence, through the vehicle of hip hop culture. Hip Hop Haven held an exhibition in Raleigh, North Carolina, where I curated and created an installation for the entrance. Our exhibition was to help educate about Hip Hop, promote the organization, and the idea of keeping youth safe through positive activities like hip hop. My installation was inspired from a lyric of a RZA song, "Twelve Jewelz", promoting education and the pursuit of bettering oneself.

Tools used
Adobe tools helped me greatly through the installation, in the planning, as well as execution of the design. I used Adobe Illustrator to create an elevation of where I was to install to scale, in order to see what size the type should be. It also allowed me to see how large the installation would be, in reference to people viewing the exhibition. Adobe Illustrator allowed me to alter typography, and then project the type on my installation space while installing. The installing process would not have been possible without this capability.

Work title: Responsive Causality
School: Art Center College of Design
Country: United States

Description
Projector, gear motor, pulleys, 4 computers, pingpong paddle, cup, Led lights, servo motors, dc motors, etc.

Communication objective
Responsive Causality is an interactive installation that generates a chain of events, between physical objects, and digital simulations. The work consists of a physical domino from a series of interactive projections, pulleys, videos, LED signs, and a large metal door that was once used for aircraft. All of these components create a hybrid chain reaction system located in what was previously an aircraft-testing facility. The goal of the installation is to raise discussions regarding the emerging modern and digital life, such as issues of control and technology.

Tools used
The projected animation was generated based on video shots. I filmed dominos in action, from the top and side view. I also filmed feathers blown by wind and a transparent bucket pouring out corn syrup and dominos. By using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects, I edited the video footage to a black and white silhouette. After creating the .flv animation for projection, I used Flash components, developed by Phil Van Allen.  Adobe ActionScript 2.0 from Adobe Flash was used for the make-controller kit of the relays, and multiple DC motors, that were all a part of the interactive installation.

Work title: Slow Down
School: Academy of Art University
Country: United States

Description
Laser cutter, wood, black paint, primer, and drywall.

Communication objective
We created a metaphorical message through the use of motion graphics as a way of communicating. Without using complex tools or time saving techniques, we chose to hand craft all of the art. The work needed to be done in a more methodical and manual process, to be consistent with the messaging.  In high contrast to the current lifestyle, the viewer is encouraged to slow down and re-evaluate their personal priorities in life, even though they may be immersed in our fast-paced current existence.

Tools used
Although most of the work was done by hand, we used quite a bit of Adobe Illustrator developing the typeface for laser cutting. After cutting the entire type project out, we shot everything.  We compiled all of our footage in Adobe After Effects. In Adobe After Effects we edited all the things needed for the video to achieve our outcome. There were some minor errors in the video, so we used Adobe Photoshop to clean up some unnecessary noise or hot spots.

Work title: Look at me, look at you
School: Royal College of Art
Country: United Kingdom

Description
Hand drawn and 2d computer animation

Communication objective
This film illustrates how to create an animation easily. With basic functions, such as 'mask' and 'transformation', and by changing position, size and rotation, it is possible to create an animation. Adobe's solutions can help anyone realize an animation, even a director. This animation shares three basic principles, "easy, simple and efficient".

Tools used
The film was created and drawn by simply using an ink pen. The reason why it appears graphic, is because I changed the 'level' of my drawings by incorporating Adobe Photoshop. Additionally, I used Adobe After Effects to animate frame by frame, and to composite each sequence. Lastly, using Adobe Premiere and Encoder, I exported the completed film.

Work title: Pork 'N Bones
School: The School of Visual Arts
Country: United States

Description
Pork ' N Bones is the story of a Pig cheating Death. Software used includes Autodesk Maya, Adobe, Aftereffects and Photoshop

Communication objective
When the Grim Reaper goes out for his daily kills he runs into a most unexpected challenge. His next kill, a pig, just doesn't seem to die. Soon the Reaper is pulling out all the stops in an effort to get rid of the hammy nuisance. Will the pig escape the inevitable and cheat death? Influences of Chuck Jones and Tex Avery served as a basis for the Pork 'N Bones animation style.

Tools used
I used Adobe Photoshop to paint the texture maps and Adobe After Effects to edit and output it.

Description
35mm photographs, Adobe products

Communication objective
An unknown figure drifts around a city... this could be anyone, this could be anywhere. The figure discovers forgotten corners and places, that often disappear into a monotonous daily existence. The animation incorporates transitional spaces, with only a fleeting human presence, contrasted against the busy commercial areas of the city. The main character urges the viewer to reconsider their perceptions of their own space and time, and how they use their supposedly familiar surroundings.

Tools used
I used Adobe After Effects to export video footage of my actor as a JPEG sequence. After exporting, I roto-scoped around each still photo in Adobe Photoshop. Finally, I composited the actor's outline by using 35mm photos of each location while using Adobe After Effects.

Work title: Mad Dogs and Englishmen
School: Royal College of Art
Country: United Kingdom

Description
Hand-drawn / Digital animation

Communication objective
‘Mad dogs and Englishmen’ is a manifestation of my own personal feelings about what it is to be British, and the inner battle between pride and shame in the country's history and current politics. The film is essentially a documentary of an air show. By observing the different people that attend the air show, we capture the atmosphere of a family day out. At the air show, there is a man dressed as a Nazi, which acts as a catalyst to kick-off patriotic fervor among the crowd. The patriots don old British military dress in response, and people start to notice the planes less and less.

Tools used
All of the animation was drawn directly into Photoshop, using a Wacom graphics tablet. Each element of each scene was animated on separate layers using the 'timeline animation' bar. Each scene was then composited in After Effects, compiling all of the drawings, and using masks or blurs and 3D camera movements.

Motion graphics

Communication objective
This is a visual comparison of the carbon footprint when traveling cross-country by plane, versus the carbon footprint when driving cross-country. In an effort to educate the consumer, and promote lowering our carbon footprint when traveling, data was shown in an impactful demonstration as the viewer watches the numbers soar along with the carbon footprint.

Tools used
I used Adobe Illustrator to create the typography and icons, and used Adobe After Effects to mimic the movement of airport terminal boards and car speedometers.

Hand traced printed images, scanned into the computer, colored in Photoshop, and animated in After Effects. Shows the conversations and remarks I've dealt with growing up half white and half Indian.

Communication objective
I'm white and half Indian, I've had the same conversations ever since I was a kid about race and stereotypes. The video was to show my reactions to the same jokes and remarks I've heard over and over since childhood.

Tools used
I printed out images in black and white, traced them in green ink, scanned them into the computer, edited and colored the images all in Adobe Photoshop. I animated the objects in After Effects.

Work title: LIFESTYLE OF NINJA
School: Keymyung University
Country: Korea

Description
It`s a printed matter, and used Photoshop CS 3.

Communication objective
We know that ninja assassins and their non-traditional ways of life actually do not exist.  This series of posters and expressions tell a story of the ninja assassin attempting to adapt to our modern society. Their efforts of coexistence with modernity appear erratic, full of parody. The images were created to illustrate that we too may be living an unnatural life, attempting to coexist within our own modern society. We too may be in contrast with all of the expectations that are attached to our social networks or technological advancements. This parody of the ninja assassin suggests to the viewer to create their own lifestyle that is in harmony with their existence and environment.

Tools used
The poster series was created by using Adobe Photoshop CS3. The process was to divide the layers, work with split line, color, and backgrounds. I also incorporated the 'brush' tool, and used the 'level' tool for color changes.

Description
Double-sided matte paper printed on Epson printer. Lion Heads beer bottles, Pink and White Spray Paint, dipped in pink wax.

Communication objective
The packaging design is for a six-pack of beer, which would appeal to an American audience, reflecting a San Antonian influence. The product would have to hold two different varieties of beer, that complimented one another. The two types of bottles have separate labels, differentiating the two types of beers. Each side of the box is designed to promote the two different beer varietals.

Tools used
Typography, and box graphics were designed and manipulated in Adobe Illustrator CS4, including the box die-cut. This was transferred into Adobe Photoshop CS4 where I manipulated the color in order to perfectly match the pink on the box with the pink wax from the bottles. After printing and comping all of the components of the package, it was photographed by Todd Vachon and touched up in Adobe Photoshop.

Description
Archival Pigment Print

Communication objective
This series of photos is an examination of my heritage, as the son of a Wisconsin dairy farmer. After moving away from the farm, I had removed myself from the context of a laboring Farmer. Within these photos, I return to immerse myself back into the farming lifestyle, reaquainting myself with the farm and my original surroundings.  In this series, I chose to adopt the anonymous identity of the farm laborer.

Tools used
Using digital, color originals, the photos were converted to black and white, adjusted many times with multiple tools, and touched up. Through the process, the images were expanded, compressed, highlighted, and modified in a way that creates an illusion of "Dust Bowl" documentary photography. The clone stamp, many adjustment layers, filters, erasures, dodging, and burning tools were used.

Card stock, yarn, laser cutter, spray paint.

Communication objective
This poster is for a fictional exhibition at the UCLA Hammer Museum. The exhibition celebrates the physicality, tactility, and craft of the printed book, and the designers who create them.

Tools used
I started off using Adobe Illustrator to mock up my concept. Once I decided on the look of the poster, I created an Adobe Illustrator file, with all of the type that was to be laser cut. After having all of the letters cut out, I set everything up and photographed the live set.  Later, I took the photo into Adobe Photoshop to edit the colors and recompose the entire image. After selecting on the final image, I went back into Adobe Illustrator to set the final type on top of the photo.
